Mission

Stanford Colleges Against Cancer/Relay For Life is a voluntary student organization dedicated to fighting cancer through awareness, advocacy, service, and research. At Stanford University, we carry out campaigns in all four of the American Cancer Society’s strategic directions: Cancer Education, Survivorship, Advocacy, and Relay for Life. More information on our strategic directions follows below:

Cancer Education focuses on educating our campus community on health issues. In the past we’ve done campaigns to promote breast cancer awareness, lung cancer awareness, the hazards of tobacco, nutrition/physical activity, skin cancer. For some examples of events we’ve done in the past, go here

Survivorship is all about celebrating survivors, providing a support network for people who’ve been touched by cancer, and reminding ourselves of why fighting cancer is still so important.

Advocacy tackles cancer at the policy level. That means collecting signatures to pass Michelle’s Law, working to make Stanford Smoke-Free, collaborating the Global Tobacco-Free Research Initiative, spreading awareness about health disparities and federal programs that need funding to provide mammograms to uninsured/underinsured women. Relay for Life is its own direction and at the same time encompasses the other three directions as well. For instance, there are Advocacy, Education, and Survivorship efforts during Relay. We celebrate survivors at the event, educate the community on cancer health issues with activities during Relay, and last year we collected 100+ signatures for a petition to pass Michelle’s Law (which mandates health insurance companies to allow college students at least 1 year’s worth of medical leave in case they get sick). There are also many smaller subcommittees/positions under Relay For Life such as Entertainment, Publicity, Logistics, Luminaria, Team Recruitment, etc.
